     ceremony/reception gift giving event?

I don't understand the concept of what is and isn't a gift giving event, though I'm seeing it often on this site.

The reception ISNT, so that must mean the ceremony is?

Yet no one brings the gifts TO the wedding?

What is the proper etiquette, if you are invited TO the wedding, you send a gift BEFORE it, and if you are invited to the reception, you are under no obligation to send anything? Please, shed some light!

This is all so complicated!! (:
