     gift giving

I recently received several wedding invitations from former neighbors/friends whose children are getting married. I have not seen these people in several years nor do we keep in touch other than Christmas cards once a year.

Am I obligated to send gifts to everyone who sends an invitation, even if I am not planning to attend the wedding?

Technically, etiquette states that all wedding invitations require a gift. If the invitation is sent to casual aquaintences, business associates not known well, or people who have not communicated in years, and they do not attend the wedding, then a gift is not expected.
