gifts for a hors d'oeuvre wedding

I was invited to a black tie hors d'oeuvre wedding. Normally I would give as a gift at least enough to cover the cost of my plate but I dont know how much to give in this situation. Do I give less or because it is formal more or the same?

Dear Gifting,

Gifts are based on feelings, not on how much someone spends on us. I'm not sure how the idea of giving based on how much a plate costs began, but it isn't logical. Plus, gifts are for the wedding, not the reception.

So, give a gift based on your relationship with the couple.

Best wishes,
