     gifts if they eloped

Are friends expected to give a gift to a couple who has eloped? What would be an appropriate gift in that situation?

Well, etiquette only requires that you bring a gift to a wedding you are invited to so since this couple eloped you are not obliged to send a gift. However, if you want to send a token of your esteem please do, however, it is your choice what to send. The gift should come from the heart and be selected on the basis of what you know about the couple. Don't let dollar value get in the way.
