how much to spend on wedding gift

I am a college student with very little extra money. I am one of my best friends bridesmaids. We have been friends since 1st grade (15 years ago). My problem is I tend to spend too much on gifts (anyones) and since I am in the wedding paying for my dress, shoes, jewelry, etc I was wondering what is an appropriate amount of money to spend on her bachlorette shower gift and also on their wedding gift? It's not that I mind spending the money I just want it to be appropriate for a friend whose wedding I'm in and that I've known so long and have been through so much with!! PLEASE HELP!!!Unsure

Firstly, let me say that gifts should be given from the heart and mind, not from the purse, so choose a gift thoughtfully and you cannot go wrong. Since you know this friend very well it shouldn't be difficult to think of a gift she'd love based on her hobbies or what she likes. This gift does not have to be cash or an expensive gift off some registry. You could choose to make a keepsake for her. If you have some crafting abilities consider taking her wedding invitation and framing it in a special way; maybe using pressed flowers or scrolling. Perhaps making a fabric covered photo album or scrapbook and using the wedding invitation on the cover.

The fact that you took the time and effort to create a lasting memory of your friend's wedding day is sure to mean a lot to the happy couple.

If you're not at all crafty or just don't have the time to make a gift, consider a personalized wedding gift engraved with their names and wedding date.

Purchasing a gift rather than giving a monetary gift is better for those on a budget and can be more meaningful too!

You're a terrific friend...enjoy the wedding!

Hi There,

I know what you mean re tendency to spend to much on anyone in general and especially close friend's. Since you are in the wedding (which can be very costly) I agree with the suggestion of some sort of keepsake or getting something that she'd like.

Some of my personal favorites are:

1) "Story Book" - I'm marginally artistic but my wedding day story book is a big hit with very close friends. all you need is a pack of colorful construction paper, ribbon, glitter, fabric paint pens (for raised letter effect), camera (preferably poloroid or digital), stickers etc..it's kind of a scrap book of the day or days leading up to her wedding day and you can create your own cleaver narrations.

2) gift cert/card to get a mani, pedi or massage (or some combination thereof). Perhaps you can even schedule time for the two of you to go together and bond.

3) engraveables - things remembered, hallmark.com and redenvelope.com have some great gift ideas that are at varying price ranges

4) major department stores - some stores like hecht's/strawbridges and macy's tend to run really good sales on special occasion type of gifts. I found a silver picture frame that also had a place to put the wedding invitation in next to the wedding picture for less than 30$. It was a huge hit!

5) TARGET - yes target! they have some really nice vases, frames etc...in their home goods section.

6) Scented/Votive candles with nice holders - Illuminations has some great ones on sale, but also check Target and Home Goods.

Good Luck!
