matching wedding gift dollar amount given by other relatives
My brother-in-law, "Sam", gave my husband's daughter $300 for a wedding gift several years ago. We didn't know how much anyone had given her, nor did we feel that it was any of our business. After all, a gift is a gift.
Both of Sam's children were married this summer, at a time when we were saving every penny for a down payment on a house after moving from TX to TN. We gave each child $100.
My mother-in-law says that Sam and his wife were bothered that we only gave their children $100 instead of $300, which we didn't even know about.
Do we owe their children each an additional $200 or are they completely off their rockers?
Thanks very much for your advice,

Dear Akallen,
Wow! That is something. You are correct that a gift is a gift and it should be based on the relationship with the special person. It shouldn't be announced and it shouldn't be matched.
No, you don't owe anyone anything.
This is just one of the reasons I find cash gifts a really big problem. There seems to be people who always want to compete and compare.
