no wedding gift request for informal party

Friend of mine got married in a simple wedding with only family in attendance. We were not invited to the ceremony. A few weeks later they are throwing a combined 4th of July/Wedding celebration barbeque at their house. They have told us "no wedding gifts please." Do we still bring a gift? If so, what would be appropriate?

You should probably honor their "no gifts" request but if you really want to bring something select a keepsake type of item, something they can remember the day by or something very sentimental.
