     sending gift if not attending wedding  

My son was married out of town. When inviting people that lived in our town, we knew that they probably would be unable to attend, but would have wanted them if able. Many did not attend of course, but none sent gifts or cards. Is this the usual, or the unusual?

Dear MOG,

This is becoming more common. In my opinion, a invitation to a wedding shouldn't obligate the receiver of the invitation to give a gift. However, there are some etiquette professionals who state that it is. So, you have both sides.

They should have sent a card though. That is always good manners.
