A friend gave us a check as a wedding gift. The check was returned because the account was closed. We were charged a fee for the returned check. Should I do nothing about this? Also, if I don't bring it to her attention, how should I write the thank you?
To make the situation a little more complicated, I found out at the wedding that she had been married two weeks earlier and I did not know about it. I had been planning on sending a gift and card to her, but now I'm not so sure how to proceed. If the account was closed, she must have known the check wouldn't go through. What is the proper way to handle this?

Re: wedding gift check returned, account closed

Dear Snd,
Normally I would just say to let it go and send a thank you note for the generous gift. But, there may be more going on here and she may not know the account is closed for some reason. So, you could send her a note including the check thanking her for the check and stating that unfortunately it couldn't be cashed. You could also mention that there is no reason for her to feel as if she needs to send you two another one, that you are just happy she could attend your wedding.
She may be in a position where she can't send you a gift.
