wedding gift for couple who don't have a wedding or reception

A co-worker/friend of mine just got married in a ceremony for just the two of them. They won't be having a reception either. Am I expected to give a gift? If so, what would be appropriate?

A gift would not be expected but you could certainly send a card or small token of your esteem, if you felt so inclined.
