wedding gift from mother and father of the bride

What is the proper etiquette for parents of the bride giving a wedding gift to the bride and groom? Is it proper etiquette to do so if they helped pay for the wedding? We were not financially able to pay for the whole wedding, but we gave what we could. I know gifts are optional, but do the parents usually give a gift as well? Thanks

Dear Proper Etiquette,

Traditionally yes the parents also gave a gift. It could be a family heirloom. But, these days, anything the parents give is a gift. So, you could mention that the assist with their wedding funds is your gift.

Best wishes,
