     wedding gifts

My friend and I hosted a couples shower for my girlfriend who I have known for 1 1/2 years. We each spent about $250. My husband and I won't be able to make it to the wedding, it is out of town. Do I need to buy her a wedding gift also?

Dear Wedding Gifts,

All gift giving is optional. However, we tend to want to shower a bride with gifts for her shower--that's the intention of the party after all. But, you are not required to give anything for her wedding. An invitation is not a request for a present.

Sincerely,
Rebecca Black, Etiquette Now
