when to send gift

Friends of mine from a few years back recently got engaged and are getting married in June of next year. I am pretty sure I am not invited to the wedding just because we aren't that close anymore but I still wanted to send them an engagement/wedding gift. When should I send them this gift? Should I wait until it gets closer to the wedding or should I just send it now?

Dear Gifting Friend,

It is so nice to do this. You may send the gift any time before the wedding. You may also call it a wedding gift.
