Is it appropriate to have approx. 6 registries just to give people a lot of different places they could go? We don't necessarily expect the gifts, but tradition says that people will bring some. Therefore, I wanted to give different choices other than just walmart. How do you then let people know of these different registries?

Most brides select 2 or 3 registries. 6 is a bit excessive. You can let people know where you are registered if they ask you directly, by word of mouth through friends and family, or in a bridal shower invitation, if someone has offered to host one. Never insert those slips of paper provided by the store into the wedding invitation though.
