Is there any way we can ask for money in lieu of traditional wedding gifts?

My fiance and I live in Arizona and we are getting married in Wisconsin. We were debating on not registering and asking for gift cards or money. This would eliminate us sending heavy/expensive packages in the mail, especially since we are getting married on a budget. I understand that this is quite tacky and difficult to word in an insert in the invitations...but is there any way we could ask and have it be okay? Blush
