Registering for wedding gifts when we're not sure where we'll be living
Hi. I'm in kind of an odd situation, and not sure how to handle the registry. My fiance is in the US Army; right now he is in training, and will be stationed somewhere when he graduates in March. We won't know where he is stationed until training is nearly over. If he is placed near me, we may be able to stay in the area and live together off base. If he is stationed somewhere else, and its somewhere I can get a job, then we will have to move. The point is, I just don't know where we will be living, and I'm worried about registering for gifts that could have to be shipped, or end up all in my house until he is finished in 2 years and we can get a place together. I can't not register because my family is fairly traditional, and because we really need a lot of help starting out. What is the best way to handle this?

Dear KatMar,
This really is a personal question.
Registries are not traditional. In fact, they are a fairly recent phenomena. So, not registering is fine. Registering and receiving gifts you need and may have to ship later really isn't much of a problem either. You may have to move a number of times if your fiance stays in the military and boxing and moving your items may be the norm. So, it is your decision to register for items you need or not. You may have to store them or move them, but no one can really make this decision for you.
Asking for cash isn't a viable option or solution. If this is what you prefer, then when people ask, you could let them know of your situation and allow them to choose.
Please remember that registry and gift information is never included with wedding invitations and only those actually attending your wedding are obligated to give a gift. In fact, even those guests sometimes do not give. It is a back-lash reaction to the gifting for everything expectation of the last decade.
