What are appropriate items to be on a bridal registry? My friends have ten speeds on their registry. The MOH told the bride to take them off. What advice would you give to the bride?

Re: [jartris] Should 10 Speed Bikes be on Wedding Gift Registry

Dear Jartris,
Miss Manners just went on a tirade recently about gift mania. Your friend may want to search for it. It was an eye opener.
A registry shouldn't be a wish list for everything a person has ever wanted in his and her life. It should be a guide for guests to purchase those items that would make it easier for the couple to begin their life together--typically home items.
This is changing a bit as couples live together and have more household items already. This is one of the reasons some are now shunning the traditional registry and urging their guests to give to charities.
There is nothing wrong with wanting special gifts. Hey, I love receiving anything chocolate or a good book. But, when we register, we need to consider our guests. Register for a variety of items that have a lower cost as well as those higher priced items. Sports equipment is not an option.
