What is an appropriate price range for wedding gift registry items

I have read that the prices for gifts should range from low to high but I'm really not sure what is meant by high. I keep hearing that people like the opportunity to go in on gifts.
Most of my registry gifts are priced in the $20-$40 range. Is $250 for a carpet cleaner too high of a price for a registry item? I think this seems too high but I'm really not sure what is appropriate. I'm a little embarrased to even ask this question and I would really appreciate some advise.

Since a gift registry is just your wish list, by all means put anything on there that you would want. If a guest chooses to purchase that for you, that is their decision.

As long as you have a sufficient number of gift requests in many ranges, you can certainly include a gift for $250 - sometimes coworkers or friends will pool their money and buy a larger gift, and sometimes relatives want to contribute as much as possible to your new life. Just make sure to "weight" the list on the more economical or moderate side so guests have many options, and they will select what they are comfortable with.

I completely agree.

It is refreshing to hear of someone worried about including an item that could be too expensive on their list.

There really isn't a concrete dollar range for a registry as we all have a different idea of what is expensive.

Very good question.
