We want to keep our wedding costs down because we are paying for the wedding ourselves so we decided to do a small cake reception following the ceremony. Is it in poor taste to also register for gifts, knowing that the reception will be inexpensive?

Dear Bridetobe,

The thought that the gift should equal the price of the plate at the reception isn't true. No one should know how much hosts spend on them and the gift is supposed to be for the wedding anyway. So, it is fine to register. But, you wouldn't list this on the invitations and the news of it is relayed by word of mouth.

Best wishes,
