     money or registry?

we plan to buy a house shortly after getting married...we would like to let our guests know that we would like money for this, but what way is appropriate?

we also would like to set up a small registry for the bridal shower, and for people who feek more comfortable giving gifts than money, we plan to have about 230 people to the wedding.... what is an appropriate size for the registry?

The only polite way to let your guests know your gift preference is through word of mouth. It is impolite to mention gifts at all on wedding invitations but you certainly could post a gift registry on a personal wedding website, if you have one.

It is acceptable to mention your gift registry in the bridal shower invitation though. When you are setting up the registry your sales person should be able to guide you with regard to selection an set up.
