     Are wedding announcements tacky?

We are having a rather large wedding of 400 invited guests. My mom wants to decrease that number and send out some announcements to some of the family that will not be able to come. My future mother-in-law is against the idea of sending announcements. She says that it is tacky and just a way to ask people who are not coming to the wedding for gifts. What do you think?

Signed, Tacky?

Please explain to your mother in law that, as per Peggy Post, wedding announcements do not oblige the recipient to send a gift. Wedding announcements are to simply inform the recipient that you've been married. It is true that some people do, and will, send wedding gifts after receiving the announcment, however they are not obligated as they would be if they received a wedding invitation.
