I couldn't find where to post this question = so it may be in the wrong place. Both our parents live overseas - it will not be possible for my boyfriend to meet my parents prior to our getting engaged but I still want him to ask my father for his blessing - they've never met or spoken on the phone, so I think a phone call is too awkward - is it acceptable for my b/f to write to my father? And ask his permission/blessing that way? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you.

Re: [chewedpupp] Asking my father's permission - long distance

Dear Father's Blessing,
I generally suggest avoiding this because it could backfire on both of you. What if your father said no? Plus, these days, you are not given away by your father. Well, in most places anyway.
There really is no etiquette here, except it was traditional for the two of them to meet face to face. Anything else just doesn't seem the same.

Perhaps they could get to know each other by email.
I agree with Rebecca - asking for your hand sounds very romantic but since they haven't met it might be better for him to simply state his intentions in a letter rather than give the opportunity for your father to turn him down.
