I have been with my fiancee for 3.5 years now, and we just got engaged. My family members have not been supportive of the relationship from the beginning,(due to an age difference) and many of us are not on a level where making phone calls is part of our interaction. Due to nature of their behavior over the past few years I feel as though inviting them to our wedding would be more of an attempt to keep up appearances then anything else and would inevitably make my wedding an uncomfortable day.
I do feel as though this is something that I would like to announce to the family, but due to the fact that they probably would not be too kind over the phone, someone suggested sending out wedding announcements. I think this is a great idea, because my extended family is not a group of people I would like to exclude from my future life, just at this point they are not open enough to come to my wedding. My concern is that if I send them an announcement am I in turn obliged to send them an invitation? Thank you very much.

No worries - announcements are sent after the wedding. Send away! Top Wedding Questions Forum Moderator - "Write your sorrows in the sand, your blessings in stone".
