Is it appropriate for groom's parents to send wedding announcements?

My son is having a small family wedding away from our home town. I would like to send announcements to my friends who were not invited to the wedding but who would be interested in knowing that my son has married. The bride's parents are not sending out announcements, so I want to pay to send my own. I am remarried and my husband is not my son's father. Is it appropriate for the groom's parents to send announcements?
Thank you for your help,

marmc

Dear Marmc,

If the couple wants you to, then it is fine. But, often these are viewed as a plea for gifts even though it is clearly not. Unless that person was very close to your son he/she may wonder why he/she is receiving it. It would probably be better to just tell those who are close about the wedding. A newspaper announcement helps too.

Best wishes,
