My fiance and I just recently got engaged and have tentatively decided on a date early next year. We are interested in sending out formal engagement announcements and are aware that these types of announcements are out-dated and may seem like a tacky plea for gifts, but we have a unique situation in where this type of announcement may seem like the route for us to go. My fiance is a local police officer who does undercover work and feels uncomfortable with doing a newspaper announcement due to revealing personal information about him and our family to the public. But on the other hand, we would like to share our news with several of our friends and family (including out-of-state parties), all of which will be invited to the wedding.
Would you please give your opinion as to whether or not our situation may be an exception to the formal engagement announcement no-no. Also, I'd like your suggestion as to how to keep the announcement short and sweet (photocard type announcement with limited space)...similar to a save-the-date notice.

Re: [bridein801] Not so public engagement announcement...

Dear Bride,
We really don't do this any more, so I couldn't suggest anything. But, you could use the newspaper and exclude pictures. List very little personal information.
Another option is to just call or email your friends and family. It doesn't have to be formal.
Most often these days, the save the date is the 'announcement'. Your guests know that you will be married soon.
