I should have found this forum way before my wedding:)
We are a mixed couple of an American husband and Czech wife. We have met at graduate school in UK, I have moved here, we agreed to get married back in my home country in June... I admit I might have neglected some American specifics in our wedding planning and just acted how I would act back at home...
Specifically - I have send out wedding invitations well ahead so people can make their travel arrangements. About a month before we left I have send out our wedding announcements to people we knew won't travel there(other than closest relatives, college friends, friends of groom's parents....). Now I know we should have send them out AFTER the wedding. There were about 60 of them.
The cultural difference I was unaware of is that in czech you receive wedding announcement and should send your congratulation card to bride and groom before the wedding so the cards can be read aloud during the reception.
So I might have done it wrong. However even now almost a month after our wedding and two weeks since we are back we have received FIVE congratulation cards. I made sure not to confuse anyone and had our US address as our reply one. Have I messed it up so badly, or they are just being neglecting and even a bit rude?
I am having an argument with my husband who claims it is not a habit neither an obligation to send your congratulations (card) to the couple who has send you their wedding announcement. This is such a strange situation, I almost start to be paranoid and think it might be personal against me (eg. disapproval on foreign bride), where i am from not sending a card in this situation would have been considered extremely bad manners.
Who is right please? Save our newlywed peace:)

Re: [Petra] Response to Wedding Announcements

Here in the US an announcement does not oblige the recipient to send a card or gift. It would be nice to acknowledge the announcement but not expected.
