     Time sensitve wedding ceremony announcement

My fiance is immigrating here and when he gets his Visa we have a very short time to have the ceremony, so no real time to plan a wedding. We want to to renew our vows later and have a reception in April of next year. We have no idea when he'll receive his Visa, there is a 3-6 month wait.

Since no one will be attending the first ceremony, how do we announce our marriage along with inviting everyone to our celebration, later? This will include all of my family and friends and his, which will be traveling here from his home country.

We are very confused. But we need to start somewhere.

Dear Renewing,

It is best to review the etiquette involved with renewing vows first before planning anything, because you may not want to marry first.

It is also best to keep these correspondences separate. Only announce to those who will not be invited to your vow renewal. Then invite guests to your vow renewal. Your guests will know that you are married when they receive the renewal invitation.

Having said that, it would be better to host a wedding reception with a video of your wedding playing in the background than a vow renewal. These are viewed much more positively than a vow renewal so soon after your wedding.

The same correspondence advice applies for this scenario.

Best wishes,
