     small wedding announcements

My fiance and I are having a very small, intimate wedding on a docked cruise ship before we leave on our honeymoon. We recently moved a great distance from both family and friends so we are going to have a reception a few months after the wedding so they can join us in the celebration. We can't have the reception immediately after the wedding because I am a teacher and we are marrying and honeymooning during spring break, thus we won't have time when we return...it'll be time to go back to school! We want to send announcements and reception invitations to everyone before the wedding but I know that traditional announcements are sent afterwards. I want our friends and family to know we are planning on getting married in an official way (sending something instead of just calling them). How could we do this without it seeming extremely odd? Thanks for any suggestions.

Dear Teacher,

As you know announcements are sent after the wedding. Plus, if you sent notices out before your wedding about your future wedding, it may seem odd and perhaps just a plea for gifts. I'm sure this is not your intent.

So, perhaps the best method to inform your loved ones about your impending wedding and reception is to send them a 'Save the Date' card for your reception. It would be too early to send invitations, but a save the date would let them know about the wedding reception. They will know that you will be married by the time of the reception, so you won't have to mention it.

Best wishes,

Thanks for the help. How far in advance should we send the Save the Date cards? Our wedding is going to be March 12 and the reception will be held in June.

You could send these out anytime, since they are not invitations. You are basically asking your guests to save this date. But, if it were me, I'd send them out after the first of the year, probably February. However, if you have guests who will have to travel, send these out now.
