Addressing invitations to couples living together

I've searched this site and fail to understand the proper addressing to couples that are living together and not married.

Does the man's name go first, or does it go by alphabetical order of last names? Are they listed all on one line or underneath each other? I've seen it done both ways and don't know which is proper.

Examples:
Outer envelope
Mr. Robert Smith and Ms. Jane Jones

Inner envelope
Mr. Smith and Ms. Jones

or

Outer Envelope:
Ms. Jane Jones and Mr. Robert Smith
(alphabetical)

Inner Envelope:
Ms. Jones and Mr. Smith

or
Outer envelope
Mr. Robert Smith
Ms. Jane Jones

Inner Envelope:
Mr. Smith
Ms. Jones

or
Outer Envelope:
Ms. Jane Jones
Mr. Robert Smith
(alphabetical)

Thank you in advance for your help in clearing this up for me!

Dear MOB,

Married couples with different last names are listed with the 'and' in between their names, not unmarried couples. That could be the confusion. It would be:

Outer Envelope:
Ms. Jane Jones
Mr. Robert Smith
(alphabetical)

Omit their first names on the inner envelope.

Best wishes,

That clears it up for me. Thank you so much!

Can you place the first names only on the inner envelopes if that is how the bride and groom refer to them?

Inner Envelope:
Jane
Robert

If that is the form the couple wishes to use and this isn't a terribly formal wedding, it will be fine.
