     Chinese Tradition- Red Money Envelope

Hello-

It's traditional to give money to the couple in a red envelope as a gift when attending a wedding. Please advise on whether its okay to have on the invitation to have guests place any monetary gift in the red envelope that will be provided with the invitation?? Thanks.

Dear Prelude,

No, this is never appropriate even for a cultural reason. We never mention gifts on our invitations or request cash payment to attend a wedding. However, this information may be spread by word of mouth. When people ask, then you could inform them. Your non Chinese friends most likely will not be following this tradition. It wouldn't be fair to expect it.

Best wishes,
