I am in the process of picking out a verse for the response card. How long in advance before the wedding date should the guest reply whether or not they will be able to attend?

Since you will need to guarantee a guest count with your caterer or venue and order favors, send more invitations, plan seating arrangements, etc you should check with your caterer to ask when they need the final count. It will most likely be around 3 weeks before the wedding.
