How to accept invitation to ceremony only

My family and I received an invitation to a friend's son's wedding ceremony and reception. We would like, however, to only attend the wedding ceremony. The response cards they provided for us give no option on which we are attending (as I understand most don't), but it leaves us trying to figure out how to fill it out. I was thinking the best option was to check that we unfortunately can not attend so that they do not have to purchase food for us, and write a note underneath saying that we will be attending the ceremony, though. Is this polite to do? Thanks for the help!
