How to address an invitation to unmarried parents of attendant in wedding

My childhood best friend is in my wedding (who still lives with his parents), and I am only doing one invitation per household, even if they are above eighteen. I want to invite him, his sister and his parents, but his parents never married, and he carries his mother's last name. Do I address the outer envelope to his mother, father, or both? I know I will list them all out on the inner envelope, but I don't know as far as the outer envelope. Or is my plan totally incorrect?

Dear Catti,

If you want to do this correctly, any guest over the age of 18 would be receiving their own invitation. So, if your friend is over 18, he should receive his own.

The parents would be listed by alphabetical order or by rank. So, if one is a Doctor, he/she would be listed first. It would appear as:

Mr. John Doe Mr. Doe and Ms. Smith

Ms. Sharon Smith

Best wishes,
