We are planning an October 2009 wedding. This is a destination wedding for our guests, though we live here (in North Carolina). Our wedding will be held still in the midst of the fall tourist season and we will need to pre-book a bank of rooms at a hotel. How soon can we send out invitations so that we may go ahead and secure those rooms? Or can we inquire on save the date cards 'yes' 'no' or 'maybe' to attendance? Thanks.

Re: Invitations for a destination wedding

Dear Kayasmomma,
This is the same as any other wedding. Many times guests need to travel. So, send the save the dates out no sooner than a year in advance with information about hotels in the area. These are not invitations so there shouldn't be a request for a response. The guests will book their lodging early if they wish to do so. You can then follow up with invitations 2 months before the wedding.
You can try to pre-book some rooms very early, but that may be difficult.
Most likely you will be talking to your guests way before the wedding. So you can let them know how important it is to book their rooms early.
