Letting wedding guests know they can bring a guest if not using inner envelope

I am sending out very simple wedding invitations. I just went to an office supply store and bought the generic packs that come with the basic cards & envelopes, which I then printed out at home, with no inner envelope. How an I be sure my guests know that they can bring a guest if I don't have an inside envelope?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Sarah

Dear Sarah,

Although it isn't the best, if yours is a very informal wedding, you could list "and guest" on the outer envelope. We don't like to do this because our guests may think that they can bring anyone and everyone they wish to our events.

Another option (best) would be to include an enclosure stating that they may bring an escort or date.

Best wishes,
