We have a list of guests that we are only inviting to the dance portion of the reception. We do not care if the "dance-only" guests decide to come to the ceremony - they are just not invited to the dinner.
Should we mail out save the date cards to the guests that are invited to the dance only? Or will this confuse the guests as to what they are invited to?

I know I'd be confused, but moreover, I'd be insulted! To be invited to only a portion of your celebration is as if to say to your guest that they are second best.
If you cannot afford to invite your guests to the entire reception, either don't invite them at all or change your plans to incorporate some money saving options so you can invite everyone to the entire reception. This is extremely impolite. We shouldn't treat people like this.
All wedding guest are invited to the entire reception and no one is invited to only part of the reception. This includes those very impolite "after" parties. Rebecca Black, Etiquette Now
