     Staggered wedding response date

Hi,

I'm getting married in May. My fiancee has family that we absolutely have to invite but he doesn't really know them and he would rather invite his friends. His mom believes that they will not come but wants to invite them anyway. I've heard from someone that they staggered their wedding response dates. Is it okay to ask do this? I'm thinking a response date of 8 weeks prior to the wedding for the first wave of invitees.

Thank you for any advise.

Dear Staggered,

This is called having an A list and a B list of wedding guests. Some find this impolite because if a guest receives an invitation somewhat late (within five to six weeks), some think the guests will know that they were on the reserve or B list. Well, if you get your invitations out plenty early and set your response date short, no one will know about your B, or in your case, preferred list of guests.

No worries.
