Using state abbreviations when addressing invitations

I was told by the post office that, because of their automated sorting equipment, it is preferred that you use the state abbreviation on the outer enveloped instead of the entire state name spelled out. Is this proper and/or correct? Thanks!

It is preferable to spell out the name of the state on the invitation but you can abbreviate the state on the envelopes in order to comply with the Postal Service guidelines.

I agree. We have to be realistic these days with respect to our Postal System.
