My family does not dance (religious reasons). So, I was considering having a short, but structured kareoke session at my reception for entertainment in place of dancing. I was thinking that while people are beginning to arrive at the reception, it could be announced that those interested could choose a song to sing to the bride and groom and the girl that is in charge of the reception music could compile a list (not too long). Then it could go on for 1/2 hour or so at a set time after we arrive at the reception. Do you think this will work?....would it be tacky or a lot of trouble?? Do you think it could cause boredom, or people to start packing it up and leaving early???

Berry - It is YOUR wedding day and you should feel free to be as creative as you like. Dancing was traditionally done to celebrate the new couple and the joining of two seperate families. Being that dancing would not be expected, it may be a good idea to have Karaoke as one of several activities for guests to enjoy at the reception and/or for you and your husband to have the only dance. Nothing to turn your special day into a festival of course, but activities that the majority of guests could participate in and enjoy. Good luck!

Just as it is important to have an experienced DJ/MC at formal events, it is also important to use an experienced Karaoke DJ, preferably one that will sing songs if no one is inclined to sing center stage. Professional Karaoke DJs can be invaluable in providing the necessary professional sound equipment and microphone for making announcements and toasts, advising the group of what will be happening next and helping the course of the evening flow smoothly. Be sure to get a demo tape of their vocal abilities BEFORE booking the Karaoke DJ.
You may also check with your KJ to see if you will be allowed to request they have available your favorite songs (2 or 3 throughout the evening), and perhaps he or she could be the one to sing those to ensure they are sung properly and all can enjoy. Your own personalized wedding singer!!!

Keep in mind that karaoke could be a hit or miss sort of deal. Unless your know for sure your guests are really into karaoke I wouldn't bother or, at the very least, I would have a limited time for it, say one hour. The rest of the reception you can play music. It doesn't have to be dance music (although many people do find that to be fun) but it can be any style of music you select. Remember, when hosting a party like a reception, you want to please and entertain as many of your guests as you can. Unfortunately, most people just don't like to be the center of attention. My opinion: leave the karaoke for the bars and for the people who seek it out. Top Wedding Questions Forum Moderator - "Write your sorrows in the sand, your blessings in stone".
