A lot of our family members don't dance, and my fiance and I can't stand half the music DJs are offering. Would it be ok to simply make some mixed cds of our own music, perhaps ask guests for musical requests on the RSVP cards, and play it at a level loud enough to dance to but soft enough to speak over? For the guests who don't dance, I thought of hiring a caricature artist to draw each of my guests and use the finished drawings as wedding favors. My fiance thinks this would be too expensive, but we'll be saving money on a DJ. What do you think?

Dear Pookabee,
Your music from your own cd's will depend on what the facility has to offer for speakers and transmitting. You wouldn't want to use a "boom box" type set up...it should be something equalized throughout the room. I'm assuming that you are forgoing the first dance and bridal party announcements? These are normally announced by your DJ. Also is there an actual dance floor or will you have to provide that also. If you don't have a lot of dancers consider using a harp for instance to just do background music.
Check into the charicaturist, I've worked with one who only charged $100 per hour. And it would be a very unique favor for your guests. Nancy Tucker President of Weddings Beautiful US http://www.weddingsbeautiful.com
My dad does comedy part time and he has a speaker system along with a microphone and everything that he used to practice on and I used to do kareoke on it. It would be easy to bring it to the wedding site, wherever it is, since we haven't chosen one yet. This will allow us to do our first dance, and, if people are up to it, they can go up to the microphone and sing with songs or say something. I don't just want background music because I like to dance, as well as sing, and I definitely want a first dance with my groom.
As for the caricature artist, they're hard to find, especially since this will be a destination wedding. The only thing I've been able to get a quote on was $150 per hour. If anyone knows of any caricature artists in the Shenandoah Valley and/or Norfolk, VA area, please let me know!
