Dear Zanderw,
This really is a personal question and each person most likely would have his or her own preference. Although this isn't etiquette related at all, I do have an opinion. I tend to prefer video over still pictures. They typically are not as posed. Brides seems to dote on still pictures, understandably, because they are so posed. But, the video seems to really capture the moment.
Of course, this is just one person's opinion and isn't based on any expertise. Only you two can make this difficult decision.

That's a tough choice and to be honest your going to get some biased answers. I'm a photographer so I say you go for the Photographer:)
Seriously though, you really need to take a look at how you like to review your memories. When you look back on your life do you feel more connected to a beautiful photo of you and a special family member or do you spend countless hours watching those special moments caught on video camera?
You could also take a look at photographer/videographers that offer the services in conjunction with one another. These are not as prevalent as specialists but they do exist.

I agree with the others but would like to offer a personal perspective. I was married back in the 80's when no one did video. We had some beautiful wedding photos but my husband died before we celebrated our third anniversary, leaving me with a young child and another on the way. It would have been wonderful for us to have a bit of video since you get to see some personality. (Sorry Justin). Perhaps you can hire a wonderful photographer and ask some family members to take video, vice versa or do as Justin suggested and find someone who might offer both.
Another suggestion is to call your local college to see if they have any photography students who might work for the experience and a bit less cash. Of course, you won't be getting a seasoned photographer like Justin, but I suppose we all have to make cut backs now. We have designed and produced custom photo books using both professional photography and professional film. The issue we had with the video film aspect was that it required viewing 30 to 100 frames to find an image that could be captured and used for the book. We get many requests from brides who only used a videographer and then decided they wanted a wedding photo book, and lacked enough good images for inclusion.
With high definition digital cameras being able to save directly to onboard hard drives, and so many family members and friends carrying those types of cameras, you might consider asking them to save to a disk and give to you after the wedding. Then hire a video editor to sort through the clips, adjust the lighting, sync to music, add the text, etc.
A good photographer is able to create pure art from a candid moment, such as when the light creates mysterious shadows against a cheek which holds a glistening tear suspended in time. They will be sure to capture "candid" moments, not just posed against the wall shots.
The clarity of a good photograph translates wonderfully to a print, as will a captured video frame, as long as the video camera used is high definition. When the videographer captures the moving moment, will the editor be able to capture the still frame that speaks the story, or will that special frame be blurred by motion? Videography has difficulty in low light situations.
We would suggest that you encourage your friends to bring their cameras still or video, hire an excellent photograher that clearly demonstrates their ability to capture images in various lighting conditions, especially subdued lighting where many moments are lost forever, and when all is done to gather up all the images and spend the next ten years sorting through them :)
