     Interviewing Wedding Photographers

How long before the wedding should you start interviewing photographers and is there an average price range that one should expect to pay?

Wedding photography expense can range from $2,000 to $5,000, and more, depending on how many hours the photographer must spend covering the event. The average appears to be around $2,000. It's never too soon to start searching for a wedding photographer, since many get booked months and sometimes years in advance.

Some helpful tips on choosing a wedding photographer:

1) Be sure to interview several photographers, don't hesitate to ask friends how they liked theirs.

2) ALWAYS request to see their portfolio of wedding pictures, complete, from start to finish of any prior weddings.

3) Check references. Ask to speak personally with some of their previous clients. You can also check with Better Business Bureau to see if there are any complaints.

4) Make sure they have back up equipment, in case their camera gets dunked by accident in the punch bowl. Wink

5) Be sure you understand each other. Is the photographer listening to what you want covered, or are they insisting they are going to shoot only what they feel is necessary.

6) Do they offer a wedding photography gift registry service to help offset the cost of your wedding pictures?

7) Will they release the images and/or negatives to you? It's always best to own your own negatives, so that later you can have custom wall prints, wedding photo book, or a video DVD produced to give to family and friends.
