What should photographer wear to shoot an outdoor wedding

I've been hired to do candid shots of an outdoor 5 p.m. wedding. (There will be a pro doing formal shots.) I will be there for part of the reception as well. The wedding is taking place at an outdoor theater so it has a slight formal feel to it, but I've been instructed that the dress is casual.

As a female photographer I feel like skirts/dresses inhibit my ability to move around freely and of course I have a fear of a wind gust coming from nowhere since we're outdoors. Anyway, I have pair of lightweight dark gray trousers, but most my short sleeved blouses (it's going to be in the upper 80's) are brighter colors. A bright blue, fuscia, coral or teal seems like it would draw too much attention my way and I don't want to feel like a ninja with a black shirt either. What's a gal to do? Thanks in advance for your help.
-Melissa

If you don't have a white or cream colored blouse in your wardrobe, consider buying one. This is classic and could be useful for all sorts of future jobs and events.

Dear Melissa,

I work with top New Jersey photographers, both male and female. The usual form of dress is black pantsuit with a tie or bow tie for men, and black pantsuit with a light color blouse, cream or white/of white, for women. In a more informal setting, women photogaphers usually wear black turtleneck or black top with black pants. In warm weather, it could be a sleevless "T". I myself, as a makeup artist, always wear black pants and black top, which seems to be a widely accepted "professional uniform" in the business. First, the black color doesn't call much attention. Second, it's a widely accepted color for professionals in the fashion, photography, and beauty industries. Everybody will immediately see you as a professional , and you won't ever be confused with a guest. You are absolutely right: the pants would give you much more freedom to move around. Don't worry about "looking like a ninja". You won't! You will look stylish and professional. Good luck!

I completely agree. And, as I always suggest to my business etiquette attendees, show them that you are serious. A jacket is a great addition for a professional look.

I agree,

My wife has been a wedding photographer for years and she suggests and wears a black pant suit and a light cream colored blouse. She looks good and professional and blends well with any formal/informal attire.

Good Luck
