Getting married now and hosting reception one year later.

What would be your best advice for couple having to get married early so that brother who is going over to Iraq can be in the wedding late summer/fall of this year (very small private) and then doing reception next summer? Once married, could they send out a wedding photo saying that they got marrried and include a save the date inscription on the photo for reception next summer? Any wording advice? Thank you

Dear Mama,

Even though, technically, they could host their reception any time during the first year, it will be almost a year by the time they host their reception. It just may be more of an anniversary party, which is entirely different. But, even if it were a reception, most of the traditional wedding reception elements would seem a bit odd--cake, all the dances, bouquet toss... .

If they decide to do this anyway, it would be better not to "announce" their wedding with a photo and include a save the date. Announcements are only sent to those not invited to the wedding or the reception. Announcing, even with a save the date, may appear as a plea for a wedding gift.

The save the dates should, probably be sent closer to the date (perhaps 6 months) of the reception. And, they will need a definite date for their guests to save.

Best wishes,
