Hosting engagement party in a public venue

My niece is getting married in October and her aunts and uncles want to throw an engagement party. The mother of the bride wants to have the party at her house.

The wedding is in New Orleans so there are all kinds of wonderful and unique places to hold it. The bride doesn't care.

How much power over this should the brides mother have over this decision.

Dear Dslewis,

Anyone may host this, but if the bride's mother wishes to, she should have the opportunity. Please note that this is not supposed to be a gift giving event. So, please no mention of gifts and no expectations of gifts. Also, there may be a bit of jumping in too quickly going on here. Only those invited to the wedding may be invited to any prewedding party. The couple would have to have their guest list finished in order to know who those engagement party guests could be.

Best wishes,
