Our daughter reserved a block of hotel rooms near the wedding ceremony and reception site for out of town guests. Ten rooms were reserved for the wedding party for both Friday (rehearsal) and Saturday (ceremony) nights. Additional rooms were reserved for Saturday night for other guests. Yesterday, she received confirmation of the reservation, but the rooms were reserved as follows; one - Thursday night, 10 Friday night, 10 Saturday night, and one Sunday night. This means that there are no rooms reserved for guests -only the wedding party, plus the unrequested Thursday and Sunday reservations. We have had the hotel printed on the direction cards and some have already been mailed out to distant guests. What can we do? (The mistake was the hotel's and they want to charge our guests almost twice as much for any additional rooms reserved. This is a well known higher end chain of hotels.)

What was her total room block for Saturday night? From what you say, it looks like she only booked ten for Friday night. In that case, the room block has been met and although it may not seem right, the hotel does not have to honor the block rate beyond those ten rooms. How many additional rooms where booked for guests on Saturday night beyond the 10 rooms originally set?
As for the Thursday and Sunday nights, the hotel does not have to honor the block rate for those nights because they were not part of the original room block.
Whenever a room rate block is negotiated, it is always best to try and get at least two to three nights into the block. I always negotiate twenty rooms and use up to three hotels to ensure everyone is accommodated in some way.
Regarding what you can do, call the director or manager over the sales department that you worked with originally to set the block. Politely plead for an extension of the room block rate to get more rooms for the main nights, as well as the Thursday and Sunday. The hotel may or may not accommodate you. I'm sorry. I thought my post explained that 10 rooms had been reserved for both Friday and Saturday evenings for the wedding party. Although I mentioned that rooms had been reserved for Saturday evening for the guests, I did neglect to include the information that 25 rooms had been reserved for the guests for Saturday evening. The reservations were made by telephone, and the confirmation was received as an e-mail. Thank you for advising us to contact the reservations manager. We'll do that, but I am afraid since we had nothing in writing prior to the e-mail that it will be the reservations clerk's word against ours. Hopefully, the hotel will feel an obligation to the customer.
