My husband to be and I have a million and a half songs we want to play at our reception but time is a problem. We don't know how long a reception should last. We need to know how many hours to plan for in order to get the right amount of songs. Someone help me please!

Many receptions where we have provided services have started at 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm cocktail hour, 6-7 buffet dinner with cake cutting, then 7 or 7:30 to midnight for the dancing.
We usually have three separate play lists, one for the cocktail hour, one for during dinner, and then the dance list. Oftentimes, we will play music while the family members are "cleaning up" and tearing down the decorations, so the job for them is not as tedious.
Keep in mind that most songs are two to four minutes in length. Even though our clients ask us to create a play list for them, which we do, they also let us know that it is okay to accept "requests". What often happens is that we play mostly "requested songs" during the dance portion of the evening.
With this in mind, if music is that important to you, be sure and let your DJ know which songs you just can't live without. If you will be allowing your DJ to accept requests, be sure to contract with one that has a good selection of ALL types of music.
We have found that guests who are allowed to request music will often participate MORE in the event, than those who choose to just sit there because their type of dance music is never played. If they know they have a chance to dance to their favorite music, they will often give in and dance to songs they would not normally dance.

We were just planning on having the reception. A cocktail hour is useless considering we are not serving actual wine at the event. We are serving sparkling grape juice. Plus, budget is a big thing for us! We want to do a traditional, yet informal wedding. So with that in mind- how long do you think the eating (buffet style), cake cutting and dancing should last?

We are getting married at a public venue and hoping to move the reception to an outside park, or botanical garden. Since we have about one and a half years, we are taking our time in deciding for sure. Since outdoor receptions take a lot of faith and cooperation in the weatherman, we want to find an indoor location with a beautiful view of the outdoors. But ,we aren't sure yet. The theme is "Unforgettable, a Night under the stars." Hand picked by the fiance and myself; Unforgettable (Nat Kind Cole) will be our first dance. We are going for a night time sort of look.
