     Our venue has changed ownership!

We booked our hotel wedding in the summer of last year for April 2006, and at the time we paid a deposit of £750 to secure the booking.

Our friend's sister works at the hotel and we found out last night that the hotel has changed ownership and has been redecorated which has made it look horrible!

The venue was chosen based, not only for it's location but also because it's a beautiful old building and the inside was beautifully decorated in a beautiful over-the-top romantic sort of style with cherubs on the ornate ceiling, a beautiful marble staircase and chandeliers. We've been told that it's now very modern and 'foul' is the word our friend's sister used!

We aren't able to get up to see the place until next week and in the meantime, I'm wondering what our rights would be for getting the deposit money back, if it's now so bad we don't want to get married there anymore. I've scoured the contract, and can't see any mention of change of ownership, so I have no idea where we stand from a legal point of view. I'd like to be armed with some knowledge before I go there in case I have a battle on my hands.

Help!!!

Dear Loulabelle,

I would relax, take a deep breath and wait until next week when you see the site. It could be acceptable to you. You would need to contact a lawyer to pursue a cancellation and return of your deposit but, if it is not acceptable to you, approach the venue first and then contact a lawyer.
