My fiance and I live in California. She would like to have her cousin, who is a clergyman that lives on the east coast, perform the ceremony. Though he has flown to California twice before to perform the funeral services for both of my fiance's parents, we would like to offer to pay for his airfare this time. If we offer to pay for his flight, are we obligated to pay for his wife and child as well? Do we also need to offer to pay for a couple nights lodging? For what it is worth, my fiance and I are the sole source of financing for wedding. Though we are able to cover the ceremony we planned, we do have financial limits (but would probably be able to come up with the additional funds if necessary).

Re: [NCIB] Paying for wedding officiant's airfare
[In reply to]
Dear NCIB,
He would know that he would have to pay his travel costs if he agreed to officiate. So, you don't have to pay for any of it. But, if you want to pay for his, you are not obligated to pay for his family.
It may be best to pay for his lodging for two days just as if he was a traveling attendant. This isn't an absolute, but is most polite and considerate.
