     Reception or no reception?

I just told my mother the date of our wedding and she said she is going to now put stuff on hold so they can pay for a reception for us. My fiance and I do not want a reception because of various reasons and she thinks it's nonsense and that we should still have a reception because they were invited to all of their friend's weddings. I'm an only child and I feel like I'm letting them down every time I tell them no. It took quite a while to get them to agree with a small ceremony. I need help bad!!!!!!Frown

Dear Wants to Keep it Simple,

You are a breath of fresh air--sweet and simple.

Many parents, especially mothers, want their child's wedding to be the social event for them that weddings were in the past. It just isn't like that anymore, for most of us anyway. I believe that your mother just wants you to have something to look back on and something for the guests.

You don't want a reception and she does. If you don't want a reception, you really don't have to have one especially if you are paying for your wedding. However, you could talk her into having just a cake and beverage reception. This could be just an hour long and very inexpensive. You don't even have to have alcohol, just a sparkling cider for toasts.

Maybe this would be the best compromise.

Good luck!
